Cooney Leads Busters in Spring Opener

Cooney Leads Busters in Spring Opener

The Buster Men's Golf Team opened their spring season this week at The Omega Treating Chemical Invite at Green Tree Country Club in Midland, TX. After day one of the event the Busters were in 7th place in the seven team field after a round of 307 in the morning followed by a team score of 306 in the afternoon round. Sophomore, Sam Cooney fired rounds of 78 and 74 and freshman, Connor Willimon carded rounds of 74 and 78 to pace the Busters on the first day. The day one leader was tournament host Midland College after team rounds of 273 and 278. Midland two round total of 551 put the Chaps 29 shots ahead of the second place team from New Mexico Community College at 580. The individual leaders at the conclusion of day one were Midland College's David Wicks and Lucas McCubbin with two round totals of 8 under par, 134.

The Busters improved again in the third round with a team total of 300, led by sophomore, Sam Cooney's, even par round of 71. However, it was not enough to move them up in the team standing. Cooney managed to finish in a tie for 15th with a three round total of 223. Midland College was able to hang on to their day one lead and win the event with a final round 283 for a tournament total of 834. New Mexico Community College remained in second followed by Dodge City in third. Midland College's Lucas McCubbin took the individual title with a final round 69 and three round total of 203.

"We had hoped to finish better as a team, but we were able to take a lot away from our first event of the spring," said GCCC head golf coach Matt Zedrick. "We improved each round as a team and Sam was able to get better each round individually and had a very impressive final round. We had a tough stretch of weather on the last day and he conducted himself really well and hung in there. We have a few days to improve before we head to Kansas City for our first conference event and we know what areas need to get better to perform at the level we know we are capable."

The Busters return to action March 23-24 at Falcon Lakes Golf Club in Basehor, KS for their first event of conference play.
