Garden City, KS-In Junior College Soccer, the rosters are as volatile as a penny stock on Wall Street.
So it should be to no one's surprise when a guy, who was not even on the roster a week ago, put Garden City on his back.
Literally and figuratively.
Marcos Fernandez scored two goals, including the go-ahead strike in the 78th minute as Garden City handed Pratt its first conference loss of the season 2-1 at Broncbuster Stadium on Wednesday.
What's more impressive is that Garden City played a man down for the majority of the second half.
"I'm really proud of how they responded when things didn't go their way," a relieved Head Coach Charles Long said after the match. "It's a lot to play with a guy down."
Abraham De La mora picked up a red card early in the second period, leaving the Broncbusters shorthanded the rest of the way. But Fernandez, who was just added to the active roster after battling through camp, came up big, scoring the eventual game-winning goal off a rebound in the 78th minute.
"It's really nice to get a conference win; especially at home," Long added.
If Fernandez was a bubble player before the match, his dramatic performance vs. the Beavers solidified his roster spot.
After falling down 1-0 three minutes into the match, Gilberto Tovar found Fernandez on a cross. In one, swift move, the Brazillian found the back of the net to tie it 1-1 with 11 minutes to go in the first half.
The win improves Garden City to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
