Garden City, KS-Tara Reid allowed just one earned run, Ryanna Johnson drove in three, and Garden City beat Colby 8-5 Thursday afternoon at Tangeman Sports Complex. The Broncbusters improved to 20-27 overall and 13-14 in conference.
After spotting Colby, a 3-0 lead, Garden City roared back in the third. Nya Chacon's two-out RBI triple got the home team on the board. An inning later, Arrianna Griego singled home Savanna Griebling to make it 3-2. Amy Schmeckpeper's team then took the lead for good in the fifth. Following an error and a walk, Lacey Kearsley singled to load the bases. Griebling then knocked in Chacon, Alanna Neilsen added an RBI base hit, and Griego drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-3. Two batters later, Johnson smoked a two-run double to the gap to give the Broncbusters a five-run cushion.
There were some anxious moments once Colby scored twice in the seventh. But Shailey Clark bounced out to shortstop Kayden Rodgers to end the game.
Reid improved to 9-12 overall in the circle for Garden City. Johnson was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Griego knocked in a pair.
Dodge City starter Abby Sims gave up two runs on six hits in 5 1/3. She struck out five and walked two.
